Rahul Gandhi calls for March to SC, renews demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday announced that the Congress and other Opposition parties, along with young people, civil society organisations and citizens committed to democracy, would march to the Supreme Court on Monday, October 12, to protest against alleged “vote chori”, demand a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and press for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Gandhi described the proposed demonstration as a collective effort to defend democracy and uphold the Constitution, stressing that people would participate irrespective of their political affiliations, gender, caste, community or state. He said a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Justice of India on behalf of the nation, placing the Opposition’s demands concerning electoral integrity before the judiciary.
“Yesterday, the nation's young came out in Delhi to peacefully protest. They came with love in their hearts, not hatred or anger. They were beaten, both by cops and BJP goons. This is not the India we want,” Gandhi said, alleging that police personnel and individuals he described as BJP supporters had assaulted young protesters. The allegations were made by Gandhi in his social media statement.
Emphasising the broader, non-partisan character of the proposed march, he said, “Tomorrow, we will march to the Supreme Court as Indians, united beyond party, gender, caste, community and state.” He appealed to young people, Opposition parties, civil society groups and all citizens who believed in democracy and stood by the Constitution to join the demonstration.
“We will submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice on behalf of the nation, demanding an end to vote chori, halting of SIR and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar,” Gandhi said, reiterating the Opposition’s allegations that irregularities in the electoral process threatened the integrity of elections.
Gandhi also launched a direct attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, accusing them of attempting to suppress public dissent. “Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Ajit Doval and Mohan Bhagwat cannot silence India's voice. These cowards cannot intimidate us. They will have to step aside,” he said.
Appealing for unity, Gandhi said the march would be conducted in a spirit of “love, brotherhood and patriotism”. He ended his message with the slogan “Daro mat” (Do not be afraid) and declared, “Tomorrow, all of India will march to the Supreme Court,” using the hashtag #ChaloDilli to mobilise support for the proposed action.
The announcement comes amid an intensifying confrontation between the Congress and other Opposition parties on one side and the Election Commission on the other over the SIR exercise and allegations of large-scale voter deletions and irregularities. Opposition parties have questioned the transparency of the revision process, warning that eligible voters could be excluded from electoral rolls and demanding stronger safeguards to protect voting rights. The Election Commission has defended the exercise as part of its responsibility to maintain accurate and updated electoral rolls.
The demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation has emerged as a central plank of the Opposition’s campaign against the poll body, with Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents accusing the Commission of failing to adequately address their concerns. The Opposition has also sought greater accountability and transparency in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls, arguing that public confidence in the electoral process must be protected.
By announcing a march to the Supreme Court and a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India, Gandhi has sought to frame the controversy as a wider constitutional and democratic question extending beyond party politics. The proposed demonstration is expected to bring together Opposition leaders, young protesters and civil society representatives, although the scale of participation and the response of the authorities remained uncertain on Sunday.
