Robert Vadra backs son Rehaan after 75 photographs removed from exhibition

Ravi Sarraf
New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) Businessman Robert Vadra on Thursday voiced support for his son Rehaan Vadra after 75 of the 105 photographs planned for his exhibition at Delhi’s Bikaner House were removed shortly before its inauguration, triggering a controversy over the display of politically sensitive artwork.
“I am very proud of my son. I stand by him, and we will look for another venue to display his photographs,” Robert Vadra said, alleging that the Bikaner House administration had objected to several photographs depicting protests in India just hours before the exhibition opened.
Titled No Idea Is Final, the exhibition was scheduled to open at 7 pm on Wednesday. According to accounts of the incident, Rehaan was asked to remove 75 photographs from the planned display of 105 works about four-and-a-half hours before the opening, leaving empty spaces on the exhibition’s red walls.
The removed photographs included images documenting protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the past six months. The exhibition also features wildlife photography and abstract works.
Robert Vadra said officials has expressed discomfort with some of the photographs shortly before the inauguration, despite the exhibition proposal having been approved on June 30 last year and the layout being submitted a week before the opening.
He questioned the timing of the objections, alleging that no concerns had been raised earlier in the process.
According to Robert Vadra, the photographs reflected his son’s sustained engagement with issues he chose to document and his individual perspective as a photographer. He said the works captured protests in India and formed a significant part of the exhibition.
Referring to two photographs that had drawn objections, Robert Vadra said his son stood by his decision to display them. One of the images featured the national flag, which Rehaan reportedly saw no reason to regard as controversial.
The episode has brought attention to the dispute over the exhibition’s contents, with the artist’s family questioning the last-minute removal of the photographs and the venue’s management defending its decision on policy grounds.
The Bikaner House Management Society, in a statement, said some photographs were found to be inconsistent with its policy and that a request was made to remove them. It added that works considered compliant with the policy continued to be displayed.
The society’s statement did not, in the account provided, specify which photographs had violated its policy.
Rehaan Vadra, son of Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra, is a visual artist and photographer. He is also the nephew of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The controversy unfolded as visitors arrived for an exhibition whose original selection had been substantially altered before it opened, with the removed works leaving visible gaps in the display UNI RVS AAB
