Delhi Assembly steps up security with eight watchtowers, vehicle scanners and RFID system

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) The Delhi Legislative Assembly is upgrading its security infrastructure with eight watchtowers, vehicle screening systems, hydraulic bollards, RFID-based vehicle identification and an expanded surveillance network, amid concerns arising from previous bomb threats and security-related incidents.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said the measures were aimed at strengthening security across the premises and improving the monitoring of vulnerable areas.
“Security infrastructure at Delhi Assembly is being upgraded to ensure safer premises,” Gupta said, outlining a series of initiatives combining physical security arrangements with digital surveillance and visitor management systems.
Eight watchtowers are being established at strategically identified locations along the front and rear sides of the Assembly complex, including the area behind the reception. One of the towers has been completed, while Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel will be deployed at the towers to monitor the premises and respond swiftly to suspicious activities.
A dedicated patrolling track is also being developed to enable CRPF personnel to patrol the Assembly perimeter from boundary to boundary. Around 70 per cent of the work on the track has been completed, according to the Assembly Secretariat.
Access control is another key component of the security upgrade. Automatic sliding doors are being installed at Gates 1 to 5, while hydraulic blocking bollards have been put in place at sensitive entry points to restrict unauthorised vehicular movement.
Under Vehicle Surveillance Systems (UVSS) have been installed at Gates 2 and 5 to screen vehicles entering the complex. The systems are intended to help security personnel identify suspicious vehicles and flag potentially fraudulent number plates for further verification.
At Gate 1, flap barriers equipped with photographic identification facilities are being installed to strengthen the verification of individuals entering the premises and maintain entry records. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology will also be used to identify and record vehicles, allowing more systematic monitoring of vehicular movement.
The Assembly currently has around 120 CCTV cameras. To plug potential surveillance gaps, Delhi Police has been asked to identify additional dark spots and vulnerable locations where cameras can be installed.
A Digital Management System has also been installed at the reception to streamline visitor registration and verification. The system enables photographic identification and recording of relevant details, including the purpose of visits, to improve accountability and regulate access to the complex.
The Assembly Secretariat said the measures were intended to create a more coordinated security framework by integrating perimeter surveillance, vehicle screening, digital identification and enhanced patrolling.
The upgraded arrangements are expected to strengthen preventive security and facilitate the early detection of potential threats, while improving safety for legislators, officers, staff and visitors to the Assembly premises.
