Gurugram: GMDA plans major MG Road overhaul; safer crossings, parking and congestion relief in focus

Gurugram, Sep 28 (UNI) Pedestrians struggling with encroached footpaths, unsafe road crossings and inadequate facilities along Gurugram's busy MG Road could see improvements, with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) proposing a series of interventions ranging from dedicated crossings and two-wheeler parking to a foot overbridge and possible grade-separated infrastructure at Sikandarpur.
GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena inspected MG Road on Monday along with officials and representatives of resident welfare associations of housing societies along the corridor.
Residents raised concerns over pedestrian movement, parking, maintenance and other public infrastructure.
Meena directed officials to keep footpaths free of encroachments through regular enforcement and monitoring, saying pedestrians should have uninterrupted access.
Dedicated patrolling teams have recently been constituted to monitor MG Road and prevent encroachments from returning, officials told him.
Pedestrian signals and designated crossings will also be considered at suitable locations to make it safer for people to move between the two sides of MG Road.
GMDA will examine the feasibility of designated two-wheeler parking spaces, while officials have been asked to remove illegal wires and signboards, clear wild vegetation and take up repairs of damaged manholes and bollards on priority.
Plantation along the corridor is also proposed to be strengthened.
In another potentially significant intervention for pedestrians, Meena directed GMDA's Mobility Division to examine the feasibility of constructing a foot overbridge near the malls on MG Road, a stretch that witnesses heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Officials will identify suitable entry and exit points while assessing the proposal to ensure that the facility does not adversely affect traffic flow.
At Sikandarpur, GMDA will examine whether an underpass or an elevated corridor could provide a longer-term solution to traffic movement problems.
A traffic consultant will study existing conditions and a Detailed Project Report will be prepared to determine the technical feasibility and the appropriate grade-separated option.
IFFCO Chowk, another major traffic junction, is also set to come under review.
Meena directed GMDA's engineering wing to coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for comprehensive redevelopment planning.
A traffic expert may be engaged to study vehicular and pedestrian movement and suggest measures to improve the functioning of the intersection.
The proposed redevelopment will also assess existing public utilities and identify infrastructure that needs strengthening.
At the Delhi-side entry to MG Road from Ghitorni, the CEO directed officials to improve adjoining roads and green belts. The enforcement wing was asked to remove building material lying in the area and examine how available spaces could be better developed and maintained.
Meena directed GMDA's engineering, mobility and enforcement wings to work jointly rather than undertake improvements in isolation, with pedestrian safety, accessibility, organised parking, cleanliness and maintenance forming the core of the proposed MG Road upgrade.
The proposals for the foot overbridge, Sikandarpur underpass or elevated corridor and parking facilities are, however, at the feasibility or planning stage, and have not yet been approved for construction, according to the information released by GMDA.
