World Rabies Day: Kangra Civil hospital spreads awareness on prevention, timely treatment

Kangra, Sep 28 (UNI) An awareness programme was organised at Civil Hospital Kangra on the occasion of World Rabies Day 2026, in order to educate patients, attendants and the public about rabies, its transmission, prevention and the importance of timely vaccination and post-exposure treatment.
Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital Kangra, Dr Alpna said, "Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease and timely medical intervention can save lives." She urged people not to panic after an animal bite but to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice without delay.
The programme, organised in collaboration with Grace School of Nursing, featured an awareness skit for patients and attendants, highlighting rabies prevention and the steps to be taken following a dog bite or suspected animal exposure.
Dr Alpna stressed that prompt medical consultation and appropriate anti-rabies treatment are essential after exposure. She also underlined the importance of regular vaccination of pet dogs and responsible pet ownership in controlling the disease.
The theme of this year's World Rabies Day, “Stronger Together”, emphasises collective efforts by the health sector, veterinary services, communities, pet owners and the public to prevent and eliminate rabies.
The programme concluded with an appeal to the public to spread awareness, promote responsible animal care and work collectively towards a rabies-free society.
