Jammu gets facelift ahead of Darbar move

ADMINISTRATION-JK-DARBAR MOVE
Jammu, Oct 25 (UNI) Jammu city is getting a facelift ahead of the annual Darbar Move, with government offices scheduled to reopen here on November 2.
Streets in the winter capital are undergoing their customary makeover, while the Traffic Department has begun installing new road dividers and regulating vehicular movement ahead of the reopening of the Darbar Move offices.
The Jammu and Kashmir government, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has officially ordered the annual Darbar Move for 2026–27, shifting the government’s base of operations from Srinagar to Jammu.
Notably, the Lieutenant Governor-led administration discontinued the 150-year-old practice in June 2021, citing the transition to a digital e-office system and estimated annual savings of Rs 200 crore.
Reviving the tradition is a key promise in the National Conference’s 2024 election manifesto.
“The offices will close in Srinagar on October 31 and reopen in Jammu on November 2,” officials here said.
Apart from roads and streets, official bungalows, government buildings and employees’ quarters are also being renovated ahead of the biannual event.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Tejinder Singh, chaired a security review meeting at the Zonal Police Headquarters (ZPHQ) in Jammu to assess security arrangements ahead of the annual Darbar Move to the winter capital.
The meeting was convened to evaluate preparedness and ensure coordinated security arrangements ahead of the seasonal shifting of government offices to Jammu.
The IGP emphasised the need for close inter-agency coordination, operational preparedness and the timely sharing of intelligence inputs to ensure a safe environment during the functioning of the Darbar in Jammu.
Officers were directed to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure that all necessary security arrangements were put in place in a coordinated and effective manner.
The SSP, Traffic City Jammu, was directed to coordinate with the SSP Jammu and work out a joint plan to address traffic congestion in Jammu city, as well as the parking of vehicles along the Governor's routes.
"Identify all vulnerable points and make adequate deployments to plug these points to prevent any untoward incident," a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, the road leading to the Civil Secretariat will also be closed ahead of the reopening of the Darbar Move offices for security reasons, an official said.
The practice of shifting the seat of government from Srinagar to Jammu during winter and vice versa was started by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1872 to escape the extreme weather conditions of the twin capital cities.
