Congress protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Srinagar, demands resignation

Srinagar, Sep 28 (UNI) The Congress on Monday staged a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar outside the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) headquarters here as part of the party’s nationwide agitation over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Led by Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera, the protest saw the participation of party workers and several leaders who raised slogans including “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” and demanded Kumar’s immediate resignation.
During the demonstration, Congress workers carried posters accusing the BJP of “vote theft” and burnt an effigy of Kumar.
The protest was stopped outside the Congress office, with police not letting the protesters to proceed beyond the barricades. A large contingent of police personnel was deployed in the area.
The Congress had called upon its workers across the to register their opposition and organise marches as part of its nationwide agitation.
MP Khera alleged that a heavy police contingent and concertina wires were deployed outside the JKPCC office in Srinagar by the LG administration to foil a protest against ‘Vote Chori’ and the “weaponisation of the ECI to favour the BJP.”
“From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the same demand is reverberating across India,” Khera said in his post on X.
“The integrity of Indian elections has been destroyed by Gyanesh Kumar Gupta at the behest of the BJP. The ECI is no longer autonomous or independent. Gyanesh Kumar Gupta should resign and turn approver - or face an independent investigation into his role and responsibility. Even the police in Kashmir agrees!!!,” he added.
Separately, Congress MLAs staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, holding banners and demanding Kumar’s resignation.
