Punjab Congress protests in Chandigarh, seeks CEC Gyanesh Kumar's removal, arrest

Chandigarh, Sep 25 (UNI) Hundreds of Punjab Congress workers protested in Chandigarh on Friday, demanding the removal and arrest of India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions, accusations the Election Commission has rejected.
The protesters, carrying placards and effigies, gathered near the Reserve Bank of India office in Sector 17 before marching towards the Election Commission office.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring accused Kumar of presiding over what his party calls “vote theft” and demanded that a criminal case be registered against him.
“Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar should be arrested for vote theft,” Warring told reporters before the march.
The Election Commission has rejected opposition allegations of manipulation of electoral rolls and has defended its revision process.
The protest follows a report by The Indian Express that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised at least 14 written objections over a 10-month period to decisions concerning electoral rolls, registration of new voters, Form 6 and voter data.
The Election Commission, responding to the report, said decisions taken by the three-member commission over the past year had been unanimous and described observations made by individual commissioners as suggestions.
Warring also demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab be deferred until after the 2027 assembly election.
“We want the elections to be held on the existing voter lists, and no eligible voter's name should be deleted,” Warring said.
The Congress said it would hold protests at the district level across Punjab from Saturday to press its demands.
