‘Head down in shame’: Sonam Wangchuk slams Ladakh compensation for protest victims

Srinagar, Sept 15 (UNI) Leh Apex Body (LAB) member and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has criticised the Ladakh administration's compensation package for victims of last year's police firing in Leh, saying he felt his “head was down in shame” over the amount announced for those killed and injured.
The Ladakh administration on Sunday announced compensation of Rs 15 lakh each for the families of the four people killed in the police firing on September 24, 2025. It also announced Rs 3 lakh each for those who sustained major injuries and Rs 1 lakh each for those with minor injuries during protests demanding statehood and other constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
After the announcement, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena said that while no compensation could replace a life lost or erase the pain endured, the administration stood firmly with the affected families in their efforts to heal and overcome their grief.
