Himachal’s 11-year wait ends as Royal Bengal Tiger pair arrives at Renuka Zoo

Shimla, September 20 (UNI) Ending a 11-year wait, a pair of Royal Bengal Tigers arrived at the Shri Renuka Ji Zoo in Himachal Pradesh from Maharashtra on Sunday, marking a significant addition to the state’s wildlife conservation and tourism infrastructure.
The tiger pair, comprising a male aged around five years and a female aged about three years, reached the zoo after covering nearly 1,900 km from Gorewada in Maharashtra.
The animals were transported under the supervision of a seven-member team led by Deputy Conservator of Forests, Shimla Wildlife Dr Shahnawaz, said the officials.
The arrival follows approval for a wildlife exchange programme obtained in August 2026.
Under the exchange, a pair of Red Jungle Fowl was sent from Shri Renuka Ji Zoo to the Tiger Rescue Centre in Nagpur, Maharashtra, in return for the Royal Bengal Tiger pair.
Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Circle, Shimla South, Priti Bhandari said the zoo had already completed the enclosure and other necessary arrangements in accordance with the habitat requirements of the tigers at a cost of around Rs 1.67 crore.
She said the arrival of the tiger pair was an important milestone for wildlife conservation in Himachal Pradesh and expressed hope that Renuka Ji Zoo would emerge as a major attraction for tourists in the future.
Dr Shahnawaz said the wildlife exchange process was initiated after approval was received in August and was carried out through the prescribed mechanism for exchange of wildlife between the two states.
He said the initiative was made possible through coordinated efforts by forest and wildlife officials of Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The planned wildlife translocation programme envisages movement of selected wildlife species between the two states based on scientific assessment, ecological evaluation and habitat suitability, with the objective of strengthening conservation efforts and supporting healthy and viable wildlife populations.
Officials said such translocations are to be undertaken in accordance with the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and other applicable rules, guidelines and statutory requirements governing wildlife management and conservation. The programme also envisages consideration of species-specific factors, including carrying capacity, habitat suitability, disease-risk assessment and post-translocation monitoring, wherever applicable. The arrival of the Royal Bengal Tiger pair is expected to add a new attraction to Shri Renuka Ji Zoo and strengthen its role in wildlife conservation, education and tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
