Two held in Karnal for allegedly transporting 15 cows in cruel conditions

Karnal, Oct 3 (UNI) Police in Haryana's Karnal district have arrested two men for allegedly transporting 15 cows in overcrowded and cruel conditions in a canter, officials said on Saturday.
The accused were identified as Krishan Chand, a resident of Balkaranpur in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj district, and Mahender, a resident of Jogipur in Siswa, Uttar Pradesh, police said.
According to police, officers at Assandh police station received information on Oct. 2 that a canter carrying cattle was travelling from the Amritsar side towards Uttar Pradesh on the 152-D highway.
Acting on the information, a team led by Sub-Inspector Yashpal set up a checkpoint near Kheri Sarfali village and intercepted the suspected vehicle.
During inspection, police allegedly found 15 cows packed tightly inside the canter and being transported in cruel conditions. The animals were safely taken out of the vehicle and the two men were apprehended, police said.
A case was subsequently registered against the accused at Assandh police station under relevant provisions of law.
The accused were produced before a court, which remanded them in three-day police custody.
Police said the two were being questioned to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the cattle and identify other people, if any, allegedly involved in the case.
