Woman arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 37 lakh to settle criminal case in Haryana

Hisar, Oct 11 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested a woman for allegedly demanding Rs 37 lakh from a complainant in exchange for withdrawing or settling a criminal case she had filed against his brother, police said today.
The accused, identified as Shalu alias Chand, originally from Azad Nagar in Hisar and currently residing in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, was arrested by the Civil Lines police following a complaint alleging blackmail and extortion.
According to police, the woman allegedly pressured the complainant to pay Rs 37 lakh as a condition for withdrawing or reaching a compromise in the case registered against his brother.
Acting on the complaint, Civil Lines police registered a case and launched an investigation, which led to her arrest.
The accused was produced before a court, which sent her to judicial custody. She has been lodged in Central Jail-II, Hisar.
Hisar Superintendent of Police Siddhant Jain said the district police would continue taking stringent action against individuals found misusing legal processes to intimidate or extort money from others.
"Strict action will continue against those who misuse the law, threaten people with false cases or attempt to extort money through blackmail," Jain said.
Police have not disclosed the nature of the original case or whether any money was actually paid to the accused. UNI KK SS
