Gurugram SHO suspended over lapses in Adani Realty manager's murder case; Supreme Court seeks police response

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Gurugram Police have suspended Badshahpur Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Bagri over alleged lapses in the investigation into the murder of a 31-year-old Adani Realty manager whose body was cremated as unidentified, as the case reached the Supreme Court and triggered a review of police procedures for handling unidentified bodies.
The action follows allegations that police failed to upload details of the recovered body on ZIPNET, an inter-state police information-sharing platform, denying the victim's family an opportunity to identify him before his cremation.
The victim, Yuvraj Singh Manchanda, a sales manager with Adani Realty, went missing on September 6. His body was recovered from a drain near Badshahpur on September 10 but was cremated as unidentified on September 14.
His sister, Harsimran Manchanda, approached the Supreme Court through senior advocate Amit Prasad, seeking accountability for the alleged procedural failures and a uniform nationwide standard operating procedure for dealing with missing persons and unidentified bodies.
The Supreme Court has sought personal affidavits from the police commissioners of Delhi and Gurugram in connection with the case, according to the petition-related account.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Sahoon Khan, the investigating officer, had already been suspended over alleged negligence in identifying the body and following the required legal procedures.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ayush Yadav said further disciplinary action was being considered against officials involved in handling the case.
"Action may be taken against at least five officials, including an inspector and forensic unit personnel, for negligence and lapses within the next one or two days," Yadav said.
He said the investigating officer had already been suspended and that the role of the doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination would also be examined.
The autopsy report had suggested drowning as the possible cause of death, raising questions after the subsequent murder investigation indicated that the victim had been shot.
Police said a recommendation for appropriate action against the doctor would be forwarded to the Haryana Health Department.
Following the controversy, Gurugram Police have introduced revised procedures for handling unidentified bodies, appointing the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) as the nodal officer responsible for monitoring such cases.
A senior Crime Branch officer has also been assigned to supervise the process and report directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Under the revised system, information about unidentified bodies, including photographs and physical descriptions, must be immediately shared with Delhi Police and control rooms in Faridabad, Jhajjar, Nuh, Rewari and Palwal to facilitate identification through missing-person records.
The murder investigation, conducted by Delhi Police using technical evidence, led to the arrest of Manchanda's former colleague Anya Vats and her associate Sanyam Sachdeva from Uttarakhand.
According to police, the two allegedly admitted during questioning to shooting Manchanda following a financial dispute. Their alleged statements have not been tested in court.
The case has raised wider questions about coordination between police jurisdictions, forensic examination standards and the handling of unidentified bodies, with the Supreme Court proceedings potentially bringing greater scrutiny to existing procedures.
Further investigation and departmental proceedings are underway.
