Punjab Police arrest 251 in anti-gangster raids, 107 suspected drug smugglers held

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Punjab Police arrested 251 people during 557 raids targeting suspected gangster associates across the state on Thursday, taking the cumulative arrests under its anti-gangster campaign to 77,071, according to official figures.
The statewide operation, conducted on the 261st day of the "Gangstran Te Vaar" campaign, also resulted in the seizure of a weapon and the arrest of seven proclaimed offenders.
Police said preventive action was taken against another 187 individuals.
The campaign, launched on January 20 under Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, involves district police units working in coordination with the Anti-Gangster Task Force.
"People can anonymously report information related to wanted criminals and gangsters" through helpline 93946-93946, police said.
Meanwhile, under the separate "Yudh Nashian Virudh" anti-drug campaign, police arrested 107 suspected drug smugglers and recovered 5.6 kg of heroin, 5 kg of opium, 4.2 kg of ganja, 648 intoxicant tablets and Rs 500 in suspected drug proceeds.
Police said the cumulative number of arrests under the 586-day anti-drug campaign had reached 83,457. Another 31 people were persuaded to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment on Thursday.
