Haryana Police seize over one lakh intoxicant tablets, capsules worth Rs 50 lakh in Sirsa; three arrested

Sirsa, Oct 19 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested three men and seized 1,00,155 pharmaceutical tablets and capsules, suspected to be intended for illegal sale as intoxicants and valued at approximately Rs 50 lakh, during a raid near Kabir Chowk in Sirsa's grain market area, officials said.
The seizure includes 97,170 tramadol tablets and 2,985 pregabalin capsules, Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan said, describing the operation as part of an intensified crackdown on the illegal trade in prescription medicines and pharmaceutical substances allegedly being diverted for recreational abuse.
The operation was carried out by a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team headed by Inspector Ravindra Singh following specific intelligence about three men allegedly preparing to sell intoxicating tablets and capsules near Kabir Chowk.
According to the police, the CIA team was patrolling the grain market area when it received information about the suspected illegal sale of pharmaceutical drugs.
Acting on the tip-off, the team reached the identified location, arrested the three suspects and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of a large quantity of tablets and capsules.
The arrested men were identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Ward No. 18, Ekta Nagar, currently residing in Shamshabad Patti, Sirsa; Ajay Kumar, son of Chiman Lal, a resident of Ekta Nagar; and Sagar Kumar, son of Vijay Kumar, a resident of Street No. 1, Inderpuri Mohalla, Sirsa.
SP Saharan said the recovered stock comprised 97,170 tablets of tramadol, an opioid painkiller with potential for dependence and misuse, and 2,985 capsules of pregabalin, a prescription medicine also associated with misuse.
The estimated market value of the seized pharmaceutical stock was approximately Rs 50 lakh, according to the police.
Following the recovery, Drug Inspector Sunil Kumar was called to the spot to examine the seized medicines and initiate further action under the applicable legal provisions.
Police said the medicines were being examined and further proceedings would depend on the findings of the drug authorities and the investigation.
The seizure has also raised questions about the source of such a large quantity of pharmaceutical medicines and the channels through which they were allegedly being supplied for unauthorised sale.
However, police have not yet disclosed the origin of the stock, its intended distribution network or whether any licensed pharmaceutical dealer was involved.
SP Saharan said the district police were conducting a sustained campaign against drug trafficking and the illegal sale of pharmaceutical substances. "Those involved in the illegal sale of intoxicating medicines will not be spared under any circumstances," Saharan said.
He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in the illegal trade. The police said further investigation and action by the drug authorities were underway.
The authorities have not yet specified the legal provisions invoked in the case or disclosed whether a formal criminal case has been registered against the three arrested men.
