Haryana Governor announces Rs 15 lakh for Valmiki hostel, calls for action against social discrimination

Kurukshetra, Oct 26 (UNI) Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh on Monday announced a grant of Rs 15 lakh for expanding the Bhagwan Valmiki Hostel in Thanesar and laid the foundation stone for two additional rooms, while calling for concrete efforts to eliminate social discrimination and ensure equality, dignity and justice for all sections of society.
Addressing a state-level Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti function organised by Maharishi Valmiki Ashram and Valmiki Sabha, the Governor said the constitutional principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity must be reflected in everyday conduct rather than remain confined to official declarations and ceremonial speeches.
"It is our collective responsibility to translate these values into our conduct rather than confining them to books and speeches," Ghosh said, stressing that social harmony and respect for human dignity were essential for building an inclusive society.
The Governor said Maharishi Valmiki's teachings on compassion, equality and sensitivity towards injustice remained relevant to contemporary social challenges.
Describing the Ramayana as a timeless guide to duty, truth, sacrifice and moral responsibility, he said its message extended beyond religious and literary traditions to the everyday lives of people.
Haryana Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi, who also addressed the gathering, said meaningful progress was impossible without the participation and cooperation of all sections of society.
Highlighting the hostel's contribution to education and social advancement, Bedi said the institution, established in 1958, had helped students who subsequently entered public service, including as legislators, ministers and government officers.
He called for collective action against social evils, particularly drug addiction, and said the state government was committed to ensuring that welfare benefits reached eligible beneficiaries without discrimination.
Turning to politics, Bedi accused the opposition of spreading misinformation about the government's policies and claimed that it was attempting to mislead people in the absence of substantive issues.
He said union Home Minister Amit Shah would hold a roadshow in Karnal on November 5 to counter what he described as the opposition's misleading claims.
Bedi said the government had taken several measures in education, healthcare, infrastructure and social welfare to improve opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
The Governor and the minister paid floral tributes to Maharishi Valmiki during the programme.
