Chitta hi chitta’ on Bathinda village walls: Police acknowledge drug problem, BJP questions Punjab crackdown

Chandigarh, Oct 25 (UNI) Police have acknowledged a drug problem in Doomwali village of Punjab's Bathinda district after the words "Chitta hi chitta" (drugs everywhere) reportedly appeared on residential walls, prompting fresh questions about the effectiveness of the Aam Aadmi Party government's anti-narcotics campaign.
Superintendent of Police (Detective) Manoj said the area was affected by drug-related activities and that police had registered nine cases and recovered narcotics over the past month.
"This is a drug-affected area. Nine cases have been registered in the past month, and narcotics have also been recovered," Manoj said.
He said police were investigating the wall-writing incident and that a case would be registered against those found responsible.
The incident has drawn attention to allegations of open drug sales in Doomwali, where the messages on walls have highlighted concerns about narcotics trafficking.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon seized on the development to question the government's Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign, alleging that its publicity was not matched by effective enforcement.
"When villagers have to write 'Chitta hi chitta' on the walls of their homes to highlight the drug menace, it raises serious questions about the government's claims of making Punjab drug-free," Dhillon said in a statement on Sunday.
He accused the Bhagwant Mann government of failing to fulfil AAP's pre-election promise to eliminate the drug menace within three months.
Dhillon also referred to the October 13 killing of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota in Mansa, saying the incident had intensified concerns about the safety of people speaking out against narcotics.
The BJP leader said families continued to suffer from drug addiction despite repeated government announcements and enforcement campaigns.
"Punjab cannot become drug-free merely through advertisements and campaign slogans. People want concrete action and accountability," he said.
The police statement, however, indicated that enforcement action was underway in the affected area, with nine cases registered during the preceding month.
Police did not specify the quantity or type of narcotics recovered, the number of arrests made or whether the cases were directly linked to the alleged drug sales highlighted by the wall writings.
