UP doubles farmer cholarship Scheme seats to 2,820, raises annual aid to Rs 60,000

Lucknow, Oct 18 (UNI) In a major boost to higher agricultural education, the Uttar Pradesh government has doubled the number of scholarships under the Chief Minister’s Farmer Scholarship Scheme from 1,410 to 2,820 and increased the annual financial assistance per student from Rs 36,000 to Rs 60,000.
The initiative aims to help meritorious students from farmer and agricultural labourer families overcome financial barriers to higher education while encouraging young people to pursue careers in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and animal husbandry.
Under the revised scheme, eligible students will receive Rs 5,000 per month, up from Rs 3,000, providing additional financial support to pursue their academic ambitions and contribute to the development of the state’s agricultural sector.
The scholarship seats in the state Agricultural Produce Market Council scheme have been doubled. Additionally, the financial assistance provided to students has also been significantly increased. This expansion will help more meritorious farmer families in the state pursue higher agricultural education.
Number of students eligible for scholarships has been increased from 45 to 90 at each agricultural university and agricultural institute, and from 15 to 30 at each agricultural college. Thus, the total number of scholarships under the scheme has increased from 1,410 to 2,820. Eligible students will now receive a scholarship of Rs 60,000 annually.
This initiative by the Yogi government will support talented children from farmer and agricultural laborer families who face challenges in pursuing higher education due to lack of financial resources. It will also provide an opportunity to promote agriculture-based knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the state by encouraging youth to pursue expertise in fields such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and animal husbandry.
The monthly scholarship amount under the Chief Minister's Farmer Scholarship Scheme has been increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000. As a result, selected students will now receive Rs 60,000 annually instead of Rs 36,000.
This means that each student will receive additional financial assistance of Rs 24,000 per year, that will help students to meet their education expenses and reduce financial pressure on their families.
From the financial years 2017-18 to 2025-26, scholarships worth approximately Rs 22.90 crore have been provided to 6,454 students through the scheme.
Now, with the scholarship seats being doubled, more students will have the opportunity to benefit from this assistance. Scholarships are being provided under this scheme to eligible students at 11 agricultural universities and agricultural institutes, and 61 agricultural colleges in the state.
Under the revised system, the number of scholarships for undergraduate courses in agricultural universities and institutes has been increased from 25 to 50, for undergraduate courses in home science from six to 12, for postgraduate courses in agriculture from 10 to 20, and for postgraduate courses in home science from four to eight.
Similarly, the number of scholarships at the undergraduate level in agricultural colleges has been increased from 10 to 20, and at the postgraduate level from five to 10. Eligible students studying agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, and related subjects are also covered under the scheme.
The scheme benefits eligible students, including sons and daughters of farmers and agricultural laborers residing in Uttar Pradesh, and eligible students who are fully dependent on them.
For undergraduate courses, a minimum of 70% marks in intermediate from the UP Board and 85% marks from other boards are required, whereas, for postgraduate courses, a minimum of 70% marks at the undergraduate level is required.
Mandi Parishad Director Jitendra Pratap Singh stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, emphasis is being placed on providing better opportunities for higher agricultural education to meritorious children of farmers and agricultural laborers. The increased number of scholarships and financial assistance will help talented students from economically disadvantaged farming families continue their studies and pursue a career in agriculture.
