Social media, AI-driven misinformation pose serious challenge to youth, warns Haryana Speaker

Chandigarh, Oct 25 (UNI) Haryana Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan on Saturday warned that the rapid spread of information through social media and artificial intelligence (AI) could expose young people to misleading and false content, calling for greater awareness, critical thinking and responsible use of emerging technologies.
Addressing a two-day international seminar at Panjab University, Kalyan said technological advancement had transformed the way information was created and consumed, making it increasingly important for young people to distinguish credible information from misinformation.
He cautioned that the growing influence of AI and social media could mislead young minds if information was accepted without proper scrutiny.
The Speaker was addressing the inaugural session of the international seminar, "Sant Ravidas: Tradition, Resistance and Consciousness of Change," organised by the university's Hindi Department to commemorate the 650th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas.
Linking the challenges of the digital age with the teachings of Guru Ravidas, Kalyan said the principles of equality, humanity, dignity and social responsibility were essential for building a society capable of resisting both discrimination and misinformation.
He described Guru Ravidas's teachings as a powerful instrument for challenging caste discrimination, social inequality and deeply entrenched prejudices.
Kalyan said Guru Ravidas had rejected the idea that a person's worth should be determined by birth, caste or social background, emphasising instead the importance of character, conduct and human values.
Referring to the saint's vision of Begumpura, an ideal society free from fear, suffering and discrimination, he said the philosophy continued to offer a framework for social justice and inclusive development.
The Speaker stressed that constitutional guarantees alone could not build a just society unless citizens also embraced ethical values in their everyday lives.
"The Constitution gives us rights, while the teachings of great personalities give us character," Kalyan said, underlining the need to combine constitutional values with personal responsibility.
He said equality, liberty, fraternity and social justice formed the foundation of democracy, but their real significance lay in how people treated one another.
Kalyan urged educational institutions, public representatives and social organisations to introduce younger generations to the teachings of social reformers while preparing them to confront contemporary challenges, including misinformation and the misuse of technology.
He said positions of authority and personal achievements had little meaning without integrity, compassion and a commitment to public service.
The Speaker also called upon young people to become agents of social harmony rather than division, saying society needed individuals who resolved conflicts instead of aggravating them.
The seminar brought together scholars, academicians, writers and researchers to examine Guru Ravidas's philosophy and its relevance to contemporary social issues.
Among those present were Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Law University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Devinder Singh, Panjab University's Hindi Department head Prof. Ashok Kumar and Dr Gurmeet Singh. UNI KK/NB CDS
