Haryana BJP leader gets Rs 5-crore extortion threat from caller claiming Lawrence-Godara gang links

Chandigarh, Sep 28 (UNI) A Haryana BJP state executive member and former panchayat samiti chairman had received an alleged Rs 5-crore extortion demand from a caller claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi and Rohit Godara gangs, he said on Monday, after lodging a complaint with the police.
Zahid Hussain, a resident of Nuh district, said he received two threatening telephone calls on Sunday night in which the caller demanded the money within two days and threatened to kill him and his family if he failed to pay.
According to Hussain's complaint, the first call came at around 8:18 p.m. on Sept. 27. The caller allegedly identified himself as a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi and Godara gangs and claimed to have detailed information about Hussain and his family.
“You are a big leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party. If you value your life and the lives of your children, pay Rs 5 crore within two days,” Hussain quoted the caller as telling him.
The conversation lasted about one minute and 41 seconds, Hussain said. After he refused to pay, the call was disconnected.
Hussain said another call came from the same number about four to five minutes later. The caller allegedly repeated the demand for “five khokha”, a slang reference to Rs 5 crore, and said his “boss” wanted a yes-or-no answer on whether the money would be paid.
“They told me they had complete information about me and my family and threatened us with death,” Hussain said. “I have sought protection for myself and my family and strict legal action against those responsible. I am not going to be intimidated by such threats.”
Hussain informed Nuh Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain and subsequently submitted a written complaint at the City police station.
Police have begun examining the telephone number and other technical details connected with the calls. According to reports citing Jain, preliminary tracing of the number indicated a location in Uttar Pradesh, though police said the identity of the caller and any actual connection with the Lawrence Bishnoi or Rohit Godara gangs would be established only after investigation.
Hussain had earlier been associated with the Indian National Lok Dal before joining the BJP in 2014.
The threat comes amid a series of extortion cases in northern India in which callers have invoked the names of organised crime groups. Police have cautioned in previous cases that claims of gang affiliation require verification because criminals have also used the names of established gangs to intimidate victims.
