Tharu to Vantangiya, UP’s Community Traditions find a stage at Deepotsav 2026

Lucknow, Nov 4 (UNI) Pilibhit’s Tharu traditions and Gorakhpur’s Vantangiya performances will feature at Deepotsav 2026, giving visitors to Ayodhya an opportunity to discover Uttar Pradesh through the communities that sustain its folk heritage.
Artists from 16 UP districts will join troupes from across India in the festival’s street and stage performances. With the main Deepotsav celebration scheduled for November 7, the programme will bring regional music, dance and costumes into visitors’ experience of the city.
The UP lineup includes Bahraich’s Domkach, Sultanpur’s Natwari, Jhansi’s Rai, Sonbhadra’s Karma and Ghazipur’s Dhobiya. Mathura’s artists will present Mayur and Bam Rasiya, while Ayodhya’s performers will bring Badhawa, Faruwahi, Damru and Shankh presentations.
“Folk traditions give each region a distinctive identity. Through Deepotsav, we want visitors to discover that richness and develop an interest in exploring the places these artists represent. This is an opportunity to connect the experience of a festival with a wider journey through Uttar Pradesh’s cultural heritage,” said Amrit Abhijat, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs.
The procession will give several traditions a moving stage. Prayagraj’s Kabiri singing and Dhedhiya dance will feature alongside Banda’s Pai Danda, Sonbhadra’s Mandal and Singha, and Dhobiya performances by artists from Azamgarh. Mayur and Badhawa will also form part of the procession, carrying these regional traditions onto Ayodhya’s streets.
The national programme will range from West Bengal’s Shri Khol and Madhya Pradesh’s Gudum Baja to Karnataka’s Dollu Kunitha and Gujarat’s Talwar Ras. Troupes from Odisha will present mask dance, Shahi Jatra, Ranappa, Chadheiya and conch playing, while artists from Jharkhand will perform Purulia Chhau.
Rajasthan’s Ghoomar and Chari, Bihar’s Jhijhiya and Bonalu presentations by artists from Andhra Pradesh will widen the selection. A Chennai troupe will bring Kavadi, Karagam and Mayur performances.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the participation would give traditional artists access to wider audiences while helping younger visitors encounter the cultural identities behind the performances.
“Alongside the lamps, folk dance, music and traditional arts will give Deepotsav its distinctive character. Artists from Uttar Pradesh and other states will make Ayodhya a cultural meeting point, taking the diversity of Indian traditions and the message of unity to visitors,” Singh said.
