Children must develop reading habits, skills, and sense of nation-building: LG Sandhu

Lucknow, Sep 17 (UNI) Reading helps people develop the ability to think, understand, and explore new ideas, said Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Delhi Lieutenant Governor, as he interacted with students during this year’s Gomti Book Festival at Lucknow University on Thursday.
He stressed the importance of books, particularly today, as busy lifestyles make it difficult to keep the habit alive.
As the governor spoke about inculcating the reading habit, Sandhu agreed on the growing importance of technology, including artificial intelligence, in everyday life.
He encouraged students to adopt modern technology but cautioned them to avoid excessive dependence on AI tools, particularly for tasks that require independent thinking and decision-making.
Sandhu also spoke about expanding one's knowledge beyond degrees and learning from the life experiences of teachers, parents and leaders across the globe.
He shared his experience of working in foreign service for 36 years and said, “My assignments in different countries allowed me to understand different societies, systems and policies.” It allowed the Delhi LG understand that the world is changing rapidly and a degree alone is not enough in this changing environment.
The governor encouraged students to develop skills alongside their education that match the needs of the changing world. He also asked young people to understand which fields and skills are likely to be important in the future.
Sandhu said India’s young population is one of the country’s important strengths. Connecting this potential with the right opportunities and skills can further strengthen India’s role globally, he added.
He encouraged students to use their knowledge and abilities for the progress of society and the nation.
The festival also witnessed the unveiling of three books published by the National Book Trust (NBT), India — ‘Tamil Kahaniyan (Punjabi)’, ‘Hari Singh Nalwa’ and ‘Veeh Visve (Punjabi)’. Dignitaries on stage, including Sandhu, Yuvraj Malik, Director, National Book Trust, India, and Jaiprakash Saini, Vice-Chancellor, University of Lucknow released these books.
