Chhattisgarh CM visits flood-hit Bastar, asks officials to speed up relief and rehabilitation for affected families

Raipur, Sep 28 (UNI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday visited flood-hit parts of Bastar division. He met affected families and reviewed relief and medical arrangements, directing officials to ensure that assistance reaches people without delay.
Sai visited Shabrinagar, Srinagar and Linepara, besides inspecting relief and health camps. He spoke to residents about the damage caused by the floods and the difficulties they were facing. At a relief camp in Shabrinagar, he checked arrangements for food, drinking water, healthcare and other essentials and also served food to people staying there. The Chief Minister also visited the home of a flood-affected family and heard about the losses suffered during the flooding. He directed officials to assess the damage promptly and extend assistance to eligible families under the applicable rules.
Heavy rain on September 23 and 24 led to flooding and waterlogging in several parts of Sukma. Relief teams are distributing dry rations and warm clothes, while health teams are carrying out medical checks, chlorinating drinking-water sources, and taking sanitation measures to guard against water-borne diseases. During his visit to the Konta area, Sai reviewed the damage caused by the rising Sabari River. Continuous rain had pushed up the river level, inundating villages along its banks and four wards of Konta Municipality. Nineteen relief centres have been arranged in the Konta area, with accommodation, food, drinking water, and other basic facilities for displaced residents.
After inspecting damaged houses and meeting families, Sai directed officials to complete the assessment of houses, household belongings, and other property on priority. He said eligible families should receive compensation under RBC 6-4 at the earliest.
The Chief Minister also announced additional assistance of Rs 10,000 each for around 300 families whose household belongings were damaged in the floods. The amount will be paid from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and will be over and above the assistance available under RBC 6-4.
Sai directed officials to speed up relief and move quickly into rehabilitation. He said the entire process, from assessing the damage to disbursing assistance, must be completed without unnecessary delay and with sensitivity to the difficulties faced by affected families. No eligible family should be left without the assistance due to it, he added. Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Subodh Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Chief Minister Rahul Bhagat and other officials accompanied him.
Mahanadi water level prompts alert in Janjgir-Champa
Meanwhile, the Janjgir-Champa district administration has stepped up monitoring of the Mahanadi following a rise in the river's water level and waterlogging in low-lying and coastal areas.
Acting on the Chief Minister's directions, Collector Janmejay Mahobe and Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Pandey inspected the Shivrinayaran barrage, bridge and vulnerable riverside stretches. They reviewed the water level and flow and assessed the administration's readiness for relief and rescue operations. They also visited the relief camp at Shri Mahant Laldas College, where arrangements have been made for accommodation, food, drinking water, lighting, sanitation and toilets. Officials were told to pay particular attention to the safety and comfort of people staying there.
Traffic on the Mahanadi bridge has been stopped as a precaution following the increase in water flow. Officials have been asked to keep a close watch on the bridge and surrounding areas and prevent people from going near stretches where the current is strong. Similar safety measures are being taken at other vulnerable points depending on the river's level and flow.
Health Department teams have also been deployed in affected areas. They are conducting regular medical examinations and maintaining stocks of essential medicines, while sanitation measures are being taken to reduce the risk of infections and illnesses linked to waterlogging. The Revenue, Police, Nagar Sena, Water Resources and Health departments have been directed to work together. Vulnerable riverbanks and waterlogging-prone locations are under continuous watch, with personnel and equipment kept ready for evacuation and rescue if the situation worsens.
The administration is also using public announcements in vulnerable riverside settlements and areas that have previously experienced waterlogging. Residents are being advised to take precautions and remain alert to any further rise in water levels. Bridges, culverts, and roads used for public movement are being monitored closely so that restrictions can be imposed quickly if conditions change.
Officials have appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary trips to rivers, bridges and ghats, particularly where water is flowing rapidly. They have also warned people against going near fast-moving water to take photographs or videos and asked them to stay away from routes or locations closed by the administration. Residents have been advised to immediately inform the authorities in case of an emergency so that relief and rescue teams can respond without delay.
