Haryana seeks fresh GST appeal relief for 646 cases involving Rs 567 crore

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday urged the GST Council to provide another one-time opportunity for taxpayers to appeal against orders from the initial years of the tax regime, citing 646 cases involving demands of Rs 567.43 crore that were rejected solely because of filing delays.
Addressing the 57th GST Council meeting in New Delhi, Saini proposed extending the relief to disputes involving tax, interest and penalties, including cases without a tax component.
"Behind these figures are taxpayers who want their cases to be heard on merits. A fair and sensitive tax system should consider their difficulty," Saini said.
He also called for a technology-based coordination mechanism to prevent overlapping investigations and enforcement proceedings by central and state GST authorities.
Saini said Haryana collected Rs 10,097 crore in gross GST during September 2026, ranking fifth among states and accounting for more than 7 per cent of domestic GST collections.
The state's GST revenue, including its share of IGST settlements, increased 26 per cent to Rs 29,108 crore during the first six months of the current financial year, compared with Rs 23,058 crore a year earlier, he said.
The chief minister also supported proposals to simplify GST registration, refunds and compliance procedures through greater automation.
He urged the Council to ensure that orders withholding input tax credit clearly specify the grounds and supporting evidence.
