UP: Girls in govt schools to receive free sanitary napkins

Lucknow, Sep 19 (UNI) All girl students studying in government schools from grades VI to XII will now be provided with free sanitary napkins.
The Yogi Adityanath government will not limit this to government schools. Arrangements will be made to provide free sanitary napkins to girls studying in government-aided schools, as well as school dropouts and out-of-school adolescent girls.
For the first time in the state, work will be done to develop a state-level policy integrating various schemes and facilities related to menstrual health and hygiene.
This decision was made at a meeting of the State-Level Menstrual Health and Hygiene Committee, formed to enhance the effectiveness of menstrual health and hygiene services for adolescent girls and to foster better coordination between various departments, held at the Annexe Building here today.
The meeting, chaired by Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Health and Family Welfare, Amit Kumar Ghosh, deliberated on increasing access to health and hygiene services for adolescent girls.
Ghosh said free sanitary napkins will be provided to all girl students in government-aided schools. Arrangements will also be developed to extend this benefit to girls who are not attending school or have dropped out.
Emphasis is being placed on expanding the scope of menstrual health and hygiene services to reach every adolescent girl. Particular priority will be given to out-of-school girls and disadvantaged groups.
Education and awareness sessions related to adolescence, along with menstrual health and hygiene management, will be integrated into regular educational activities in schools. Extensive awareness programmes will also be conducted to provide adolescent girls with the necessary information and prepare them mentally before they begin menstruating.
While promoting safe and hygienic menstrual practices, there will also be an emphasis on dispelling myths, misconceptions, and social stigma associated with menstruation. Other communication tools, including digital and social media, will be utilized for this purpose.
Preparations are underway to bring various schemes and initiatives related to menstrual health and hygiene under one umbrella. To this end, work will be underway to develop a State Menstrual Health and Hygiene Policy. This will ensure a comprehensive and institutionalized approach to services and better coordination between departments.
Ghosh directed all concerned departments to coordinate and discharge their responsibilities in a timely and effective manner, prioritizing them.
He urged special attention to sanitation in schools. He also directed adolescent girls to create an environment where they can safely and easily access sanitation and health-related facilities. He stated that all departments must work together to effectively implement menstrual health and hygiene programmes, ensuring timely access to essential services.
