Himachal Congress leader Pratibha Singh raises concerns over SIR, alleges threat to electoral system

Shimla, Sep 30 (UNI) All India Congress Working Committee member and former Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pratibha Singh alleged that the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reported differences within the Election Commission had raised serious concerns over the country’s electoral system.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi after attending a meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Tuesday, Pratibha Singh said the alleged differences within the Election Commission and what she described as unilateral decisions by the Chief Election Commissioner had raised questions over the electoral process.
She claimed that the country was witnessing, for the first time, such serious allegations against a Chief Election Commissioner and said the issue should be viewed as a matter of concern for the electoral system and democratic institutions.
She said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the CWC meeting, had called upon party leaders to work for the protection of the Constitution and launch a nationwide campaign against what the party describes as “vote theft”.
She alleged that the BJP was making efforts to defend Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the controversy over the SIR exercise.
Referring to reports about differences within the Election Commission over the SIR process, Pratibha Singh claimed that the exercise had raised concerns about the rights of voters.
She alleged that more than 13 lakh voters had so far been deprived of their voting rights as a result of the electoral-roll revision.
The Congress leader said the issue was not merely related to electoral rolls but concerned the rights of citizens and the credibility of the electoral process.
She alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner should not continue in office in view of the controversy and demanded accountability over the decisions taken during the revision process.
Pratibha Singh further alleged that citizens’ rights had been violated and made a strong demand for legal action against those responsible, including a reference to prosecution for sedition.
She said Rahul Gandhi had made it clear that the Congress would not remain silent on the issue and would continue to raise the matter across the country.
Pratibha Singh also called upon the BJP to apologise to the people over what she described as a serious assault on democratic rights.
The allegations come amid an ongoing political debate over the SIR exercise and the Election Commission’s handling of electoral-roll revision, with the Congress raising objections and the BJP defending the poll panel’s decisions.
