Panun Kashmir questions J&K statehood demand, seeks justice and political rehabilitation for displaced Pandits

Kangra, Sept 30 (UNI) Panun Kashmir on Wednesday questioned the demand for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying that “justice must precede statehood” and that the rights and rehabilitation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits must be addressed.
Panun Kashmir senior spokesperson Lenin Bhat who was here told UNI that the J&K Assembly’s resolution seeking restoration of statehood should not be viewed as a triumph of democracy without addressing the concerns of the Kashmiri Pandit community.
Bhat alleged that lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave their ancestral homeland due to terrorism, threats and targeted killings, while their homes and properties were allegedly looted or occupied and temples desecrated.
He said the displacement took place when Jammu and Kashmir had an elected Assembly, government and Chief Minister, and questioned the failure of democratic institutions to protect the community.
“Elections cannot delegitimise exile and an Assembly cannot erase genocide. A resolution cannot restore a stolen homeland,” Lenin said, adding that political normalcy could not be built on the permanent displacement of an entire community.
He asserted that the Union/Lieutenant Governor’s administration should continue until a credible framework was established to address the rights, security and political rehabilitation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits.
Bhat also called for a rigorous security and administrative process to identify and remove from sensitive positions individuals credibly established to have links with terrorist organisations or extremist networks.
“Justice must precede statehood. One law, one Constitution, one standard of justice and zero tolerance for terrorism,” he said.
He demanded recognition of what his organisation describes as the “genocide” of Kashmiri Hindus, protection of their properties and rights, accountability for acts of terrorism and a safe and constitutionally protected return of displaced Pandits to Kashmir.
“Kashmir cannot be declared normal while its original inhabitants remain in exile. Statehood cannot become a substitute for justice,” Bhat said.
