Indira Gandhi, Sardar Patel made invaluable contributions to nation-building: Himachal CM

Shimla, Oct 31 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary and recalled the kcontributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth planniversary, saying both leaders played an unparalleled role in strengthening the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country.
The Chief Minister offered floral tributes at the statue of Indira Gandhi at The Ridge here on the occasion of Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas.
A blood donation camp was also organised to mark the day.
He also remembered Sardar Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India, and administered the oath of national integration to those present. Interacting with mediapersons, Sukhu described Indira Gandhi as an extraordinary leader known for her courage, determination and ability to take bold decisions during challenging circumstances.
He said her leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war was a defining moment in the country's history, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh and transformed the geopolitical landscape of the subcontinent. Taking such a historic decision when India was facing several developmental and security challenges reflected her political vision and strong leadership, he added.
The Chief Minister said Indira Gandhi had taken several significant decisions in the larger interest of the country, including the nationalisation of banks, abolition of privy purses of former rulers and implementation of land ceiling measures.
These initiatives aimed at reducing economic inequalities, strengthening the public sector and ensuring that the benefits of development reached wider sections of society.
Recalling her commitment to national unity and integrity, Sukhu said she laid down her life while serving the country, leaving behind a legacy of courage, patriotism and dedication.
Remembering Sardar Patel, the Chief Minister said his decisive role in integrating princely states into the Indian union after Independence had laid the foundation of a united India. Despite resistance and complex challenges, Patel demonstrated exceptional administrative ability and political determination in bringing hundreds of princely states together, including Hyderabad and Jammu and Kashmir, he said. Sukhu also highlighted the importance of protecting constitutional values and democratic institutions, saying the Congress had consistently worked towards strengthening the country's democratic framework.
He said universal adult franchise had empowered every citizen, irrespective of social or economic background, to participate in the democratic process and provided equal opportunities to people from different sections of society.
The right to vote was among the most significant achievements of Independence and must be protected at all costs, he said, adding that allegations of electoral manipulation and irregularities required transparent investigation and accountability.
The Chief Minister said the Congress was exercising its democratic right to raise concerns over any alleged attempt to undermine the electoral process. Reiterating that the Constitution was the soul of Indian democracy, Sukhu said the legacy of Indira Gandhi and Sardar Patel inspired the country to remain united, uphold democratic principles and work towards an inclusive and progressive India.
