Himachal Guv honours winning filmmakers at 12th International Film Festival of Shimla

Shimla, September 27 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta presented awards to winning filmmakers at the 12th International Film Festival of Shimla (IFFS), marking the culmination of a three-day celebration of international, national and regional cinema at the historic Gaiety Cultural Complex here on Sunday. The Governor honoured filmmakers whose works were recognised in International, National and State categories for excellence in documentary, short film, animation, student cinema and emerging forms of filmmaking, including AI-generated cinema. Addressing the gathering, Gupta congratulated the award winners and participants and appreciated the festival for bringing together filmmakers from different countries, states and cultural backgrounds on a common platform.
He said the participation of films from different parts of India, Indian languages and various countries had given the festival an international character, while its focus on regional and Indian-language cinema reflected the country's cultural diversity. Gupta said Himachal Pradesh, with its rich folk traditions, music, dance, handicrafts and natural beauty, offered immense possibilities for filmmakers.
He said an international film festival in Shimla provided an important platform to showcase the state's cultural identity before audiences in India and abroad.
The Governor also appreciated the festival's emphasis on interaction between filmmakers and audiences, master classes and knowledge exchange, particularly for young filmmakers and students. He said digital technology and new media platforms had created new opportunities for young talent to take their stories to wider audiences.
At the same time, originality, social sensitivity and creative integrity remained important elements of filmmaking, he said.
Gupta congratulated the organisers, partner institutions, film selection team and others associated with the festival and expressed hope that IFFS would continue to connect filmmakers from India and abroad while providing a wider platform to Himachal's cultural heritage and emerging talent.
He said the success of a film festival should also be measured by the new ideas and meaningful dialogue it generated, and hoped Shimla would continue to emerge as a centre for creativity, culture and dialogue on world cinema.
In the International category, Far From Home was adjudged Best Long Documentary, while The Sound of the Soul won Best Short Documentary. The Everest Dream received the Special Jury Award for Short Documentary. Renewal was named Best Short Film, with The Mould receiving the Special Jury Award. The Rusty Fish won Best Animation Film and Milo received the Special Jury Award for Animation. Coexistence was adjudged Best AI Film, while Eternal Kinship won Best Student Film and Lullaby received the Special Jury Award in the student category. In the National category, The Genesis of Rasa won Best Long Documentary and Coal Diggers of India was adjudged Best Short Documentary. Halgi won Best Short Film, while Nyingma: Through Her Eyes and An Oyster Life received Special Jury Awards. In the State category, Tenfa won Best Short Film and Chupi Roh received the Special Jury Award.
The final day featured three screening sessions covering long documentaries, short films, animation, AI, student, documentary and regional cinema. The films explored themes ranging from culture and human relationships to social realities, environment and contemporary storytelling.
