Haryana at 60: Road infrastructure expands, major projects strengthen connectivity across state

Panchkula, Oct 28 (UNI) From expanding its road network to undertaking large-scale road repairs and developing new bypasses and highways, Haryana has made connectivity a major focus of infrastructure development over six decades.
As the state prepares to celebrate its 60th Haryana Day on November 1, the expansion of road infrastructure and the implementation of major transport projects highlight the changing connectivity landscape since its formation in 1966.
According to comparative figures provided for Haryana Day, the state's metalled road network has grown from 5,100 kilometres in 1966-67 to 55,275 kilometres in 2026-27. The figures also indicate that road connectivity has expanded from 1,386 villages in the early years to cover all villages in the state.
A government official said the present BJP government has undertaken several infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving road conditions, easing traffic congestion and strengthening links between villages, towns, industrial centres and neighbouring regions.
In September 2026, the Haryana government has approved five bypass projects at Hisar, Kurukshetra, Narnaul, Jind and Sohna-Palwal, with a combined estimated investment of around Rs 9,700 crore.
The proposed Hisar bypass is intended to connect the Hisar-Rajgarh Road (NH-52) with the Hisar-Delhi and Hisar-Kaithal roads. Such projects aim to divert traffic from congested urban areas and improve movement along key transport routes.
The Rewari bypass, estimated to have cost approximately Rs 1,069 crore in the supplied information, has also been reported as operational.
Alongside new construction, the state has focused on upgrading existing roads. Under the Regional Road Upgradation Project, repairs were planned for 4,227 roads spanning 9,410 kilometres during the 2025-26 financial year, at an estimated cost of Rs 4,827 crore.
The programme is intended to improve road conditions and maintain connectivity across districts. Better-maintained roads are particularly important for rural communities, where local routes provide essential links to agricultural markets, schools, healthcare facilities and nearby towns.
The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is among the major transport projects expected to strengthen connectivity between Haryana and other northern states. The Prime Minister's Office has cited an estimated cost of approximately Rs 9,680 crore for the 157.92-kilometre section comprising Packages 1–5. This figure relates to that section, not the entire expressway.
The 33.81-kilometre Ambala-Kala Amb Highway is another important project aimed at improving connectivity in the region. The Jind-Gohana National Highway and the Hansi-Barwala National Highway have also been highlighted in the state's infrastructure information.
The supplied project details list the Jind-Gohana highway at an estimated cost of Rs 1,600 crore and the Hansi-Barwala highway at an estimated cost of Rs 135 crore. These individual costs and the completion status of the projects require confirmation from official project records before publication.
The expansion of the road network, investment in road maintenance, and the development of bypasses and highways have helped strengthen the links between rural communities, urban centres, and economic hubs.
As Haryana marks six decades of statehood, road infrastructure remains a key component of its development, supporting the movement of agricultural produce, passenger transport, commercial activity and access to public services.
