Mirwaiz concerned over rejection of separatist leader Shabir Shah’s bail

Srinagar, Oct 7 (UNI) Hurriyat Conference chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday expressed concern over the rejection of separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah’s bail plea by a special NIA court, describing the development as “deeply disappointing and unjust.”
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said Shah’s incarceration continues after nearly four decades spent in prisons without conviction.

“Despite the Supreme Court granting him bail in March this year, his incarceration continues after nearly four decades spent in prisons without conviction. His prolonged detention has seriously affected his health, and he needs urgent medical attention and family care. The same concern applies to most other political prisoners suffering serious health issues after years of detention and delayed trials,” Mirwaiz said
He appealed to the Government of India, opposition leaders, civil society and all those who believe in human dignity and the right to difference of opinion to ensure their release and return to families.
The statement came after a special NIA court in Jammu rejected Shah’s bail application in a case arising from an FIR registered in 1996 in connection with violence during a funeral procession in Srinagar.
