Warring seeks probe into Punjab Campus violence, steps up attack on Election Commission

Chandigarh, Sep 28 (UNI) Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday demanded an independent investigation into recent violence at private university campuses in the state, saying similarities in the incidents raised concerns over student safety, while separately stepping up his party's campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Warring said violence at two university campuses within a short span had exposed what he described as the Aam Aadmi Party government's failure to anticipate and control unrest.
“The government has been caught unawares once again as it still remains clueless about the cause of the violence,” Warring said in a statement.
He said reports and allegations concerning female students appeared to have triggered anger among students in both instances, and called for an independent inquiry to establish the facts. The allegations surrounding the incidents remain under investigation.
“Only an impartial and independent probe can establish the truth,” Warring said, adding that authorities needed to address concerns over the safety of students, particularly women.
At Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, protests erupted following an allegation of sexual assault on a female student. Police have registered a case against an unidentified person and constituted a Special Investigation Team to investigate the allegation and the circumstances surrounding the unrest.
Warring said unrest at university campuses was particularly concerning in Punjab, a border state that is due to hold assembly elections in 2027.
Separately, Warring led a Congress protest in Ferozepur on Monday, according to the party statement, demanding the removal and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the electoral process.
Congress workers also burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kumar, the party said.
Warring accused Kumar of having “subverted and sabotaged” the electoral process and alleged that voters were being improperly removed from electoral rolls. He also claimed that about 20 lakh names had been deleted from electoral rolls in Punjab.
The figure could not immediately be independently verified. The Election Commission has rejected broader opposition allegations of electoral-roll manipulation and has defended the revision process.
Warring urged Congress workers to scrutinise electoral rolls and remain alert to any deletion of eligible voters ahead of the Punjab assembly elections.
The Ferozepur demonstration follows a Congress protest in Chandigarh on September 25, when party workers attempted to march towards the Election Commission office in Sector 17. Police used water cannons and detained protesters after they tried to cross barricades.
“What is seen to be an electoral victory is actually the theft of the elections,” Warring said during that protest, alleging irregularities in previous elections. The Election Commission has disputed such allegations.
Warring also attacked the AAP government in Punjab, describing the AAP and Bharatiya Janata Party as “two sides of the same coin” and accusing the state government of misusing official resources.
He alleged that government accommodation meant for Punjab ministers had been allotted to unauthorised occupants from outside the state. Warring had raised similar allegations earlier this week, demanding that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have such accommodation vacated and recover penal rent from unauthorised occupants.
The AAP government and the Election Commission did not immediately respond to the allegations made in the Congress' statements on Monday.
