20 e-rickshaws found charging through illegal power connection in Chandigarh, 30 kW load detected

Chandigarh, Oct 15 (UNI) Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) on Thursday said it had detected electricity theft involving the illegal charging of 20 e-rickshaws in Manimajra, with an estimated connected load of 30 kilowatts (kW).
The theft was uncovered during an enforcement drive in Shastri Nagar, where a consumer holding a registered electricity connection was allegedly drawing power directly from the company's low-voltage distribution mains, bypassing the authorised supply system.
CPDL said its inspection team found that the unauthorised connection was being used to charge 20 e-rickshaws, posing potential electrical safety risks besides causing revenue losses to the distribution utility.
The company said it had stepped up scrutiny of e-rickshaw charging facilities across Chandigarh, with enforcement teams analysing electricity consumption patterns to identify discrepancies between actual usage and sanctioned loads.
"We will continue conducting regular enforcement drives across the city to detect such violations and safeguard the electricity distribution network," a CPDL official said.
The utility warned consumers against drawing electricity through unauthorised connections and urged them to use only legally sanctioned supply arrangements.
CPDL, part of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, distributes electricity and provides retail supply across the union Territory of Chandigarh.
The company did not disclose the amount of electricity allegedly stolen, the financial loss involved, or whether any penalty or legal proceedings had been initiated against the consumer.
