Central University of Himachal secures 17th rank in THE World University Rankings

Dharamshala, Oct 5 (UNI) The Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) has secured the 17th rank among Indian universities and higher educational institutions in its debut appearance in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, marking a significant milestone for the institution.
The university has been placed in the 701–800 global band and secured 4th position among India’s 56 Central Universities. It also ranked 3rd among Central Universities on research performance and emerged as the top-ranked government higher education institution in Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing a press conference, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sat Prakash Bansal described the achievement as a major recognition of the university’s growth.
“This is a proud achievement for the university and reflects the strong academic and research foundation we have built in a relatively short period.”
Prof. Bansal said the university’s performance was particularly significant given that it was competing with nearly 1,400 universities and higher education institutions across the country.
The THE World University Rankings assess institutions on five broad pillars — Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry Engagement.
CUHP recorded a 76.2 score in Research Quality, which Prof. Bansal attributed to research projects, high-impact publications and efforts to strengthen the research ecosystem on campus.
“Our research performance reflects the quality of work being undertaken by our faculty and researchers and the sustained efforts to create a strong research culture.”
The university scored 35.4 in Teaching. Prof. Bansal acknowledged that greater efforts are needed to improve the university’s international outlook and industry partnerships.
The Vice-Chancellor said the university plans to establish facilities for international students, including an international hostel, while also attracting foreign students and faculty.
“Internationalisation and industry engagement will be among our major focus areas as we move towards the permanent campus.”
The university has also expanded its research collaborations, including projects with ISRO, and signed several international MoUs. This year, it received around ₹11 crore under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), with nearly ₹7 crore earmarked for advanced equipment.
Prof. Bansal said the university’s earlier achievements, including its 8th position in NIRF rankings, NAAC A grade and graded autonomy status, demonstrate its steady academic growth.
On the permanent Dharamshala campus, Prof. Bansal said the project remains a top priority. Although budgetary formalities had caused some delays, clearances are progressing and the university hopes to shift into parts of the campus by January, subject to favourable conditions.
“The permanent campus remains our top priority. Once the infrastructure is fully developed, it will provide a major boost to our academic, research and international activities.”
He also announced plans for a large botanical garden on six acres in Dehra, including a Navagraha Vatika. The facility will support research and education and will also be accessible to schools, colleges, tourists and the general public.
Prof. Bansal expressed confidence that improved infrastructure, stronger global collaborations and greater industry engagement would help the university improve its position further.“Our long-term goal is to enter the world’s top 200 institutions.”
Congratulating faculty, researchers, students and staff, Prof. Bansal said the latest ranking demonstrated that the university had established a presence on the global academic stage despite operating with limited resources.UNI AAB
