UP ranks first in groundwater source testing, surpassing Punjab and Andhra Pradesh

Lucknow, Sep 18 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government is continuously setting new benchmarks for water conservation, improving groundwater levels, and providing clean and safe water to every household. The state
has achieved first place in the country in the testing being conducted to monitor the quality and condition of groundwater sources.
As part of the testing, state and district-level laboratories have examined groundwater sources, underground and overhead tanks, and other water sources across the state.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, had set a target of testing 48,055 groundwater sources in the first half of the financial year 2026-27, against which testing of 45,361 sources has been completed. This represents 94.39 per cent of the total target. Based on data up to September 15, 2026, Uttar Pradesh ranks first among states in the country.
Yogesh Kumar, Managing Director, Rural UP Jal Nigam, stated here on Friday that regular testing of groundwater sources is crucial for monitoring drinking water quality and the status of water sources. At the central government level, emphasis is also being placed on water source quality, source sustainability, and intensive monitoring. Uttar Pradesh has achieved the best results in this regard, and efforts will continue to provide safe drinking water to everyone in the state in the future.

In the state-wise ranking of groundwater source testing, Punjab is second, and Andhra Pradesh is third, after Uttar Pradesh. Punjab has achieved 83.46 per cent of its target, while Andhra Pradesh has also achieved 83.46 per cent. Uttarakhand is fourth with 82.30 per cent achievement, and Kerala is fifth with 81.13 per cent.
UP Jal Nigam Rural Superintendent Engineer and State Laboratory Head Gyanendra Kumar Chaudhary stated that Uttar Pradesh's 94.39 per cent achievement in groundwater source testing is significantly higher than the national average of 50.46 per cent. This means Uttar Pradesh has achieved nearly 44 per cent more than the national average.
For the financial year 2026-27, Uttar Pradesh had a target of testing a total of 48,055 groundwater sources. Of this, 45,361 sources have been tested. Testing of 2,694 sources remains to be achieved to meet the target. In this way, the state has achieved a major part of the target set in the first half itself.
