Heavy rains in UP following Arnab impact, throws normal life out of gear

Lucknow, Sep 26 (UNI) Normal life has been affected in Uttar Pradesh following wide spread heavy rains since Friday morning in Eastern and Central parts due to the Arnab cyclone impact.
Around 9 people have lost their lives due to rain related incidents mostly due to house collapse and other minor mishaps. Most of the districts have closed the schools and colleges on Saturday.
The entire state has been experiencing heavy downpours for the past 40 hours, with winds blowing at speeds of 40-50 km/h.
Roads have become ponds, water has entered housing colonies, and threat of flooding looms large in 32 districts.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has advised that , "People should not leave their homes unnecessarily. Take care of your loved ones. The government stands with you."
Traffic has been affected in most parts of the state.
Due to heavy rains, schools will be closed today through the 8th grade in 11 districts and through the 12th grade in 25 districts. All universities and colleges in Lucknow, Sultanpur, and Shamli will also be closed.
The Relief Commissioner has warned people to stay away from river banks.
Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Center, Lucknow, said that the rain had spread further across the state on Saturday. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in several districts. The Terai region bordering Nepal is expected to be the most affected. Due to the rain, temperatures have dropped significantly in most parts of the state, reaching below normal.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, and Shahjahanpur, with extremely heavy rainfall expected. These eight districts and surrounding areas are under a red alert.
An orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Basti, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Hardoi, Lucknow, Barabanki, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Sambhal, and Badaun. Rain is also expected in large parts of Purvanchal, central, and western Uttar Pradesh.
Seeing the warning of heavy rain in the state, Relief Commissioner Dr. Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod held a review meeting with the District Magistrates of the districts under Red and Orange alert on Friday through video conferencing.
The Relief Commissioner directed the District Magistrates to be extra vigilant in view of the Red alert in Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur. At the same time, the officials of the districts under Orange alert including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Bareilly, Badaun, Barabanki and Raebareli have been asked to remain active in the area and take precautionary measures.
Due to the low pressure area (depression) formed in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, the weather in Uttar Pradesh is predicted to remain affected till September 27.
Following the warning of the Meteorological Department, relief agencies have been put on alert mode in view of the possibility of flash floods in the watershed areas of many districts including Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Ballia, Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar and Fatehpur.
Apart from this, to protect from the danger of strong storm and thunderstorm (lightning), the administration has been instructed to ensure that no one stays under the open sky, under trees or in parks.
The administration, stating that the safety of life and property of every citizen is its primary responsibility, has ordered officials to personally assess the situation on the ground. Weather warnings and necessary precautions are being widely disseminated through local media and public address systems.
All relief and rescue teams have been fully activated to respond promptly in case of any emergency.
Furthermore, the Relief Commissioner has appealed to the general public to leave their homes only for essential work and to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the administration and the Meteorological Department.
