Wildlife Week will be celebrated in UP from October 2 to 8

Lucknow, Oct 1 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department will celebrate Wildlife Week across the state from October 2 to 8. A series of competitions and awareness programmes on wildlife and environmental conservation will be organised throughout the week, including mask-making, wildlife camouflage and imitation painting, street plays, fancy dress, face painting, rangoli and mehndi.
During the celebrations, children from across Uttar Pradesh will get an opportunity to express their experiences and creativity through activities centred on the “world of wildlife”. Entry to zoos will be free for participating students and children up to 12 years of age during the period.
UP Minister of State for Forests (Independent Charge) Dr Arun Kumar Saxena will inaugurate the celebrations with a “Walkathon for Wildlife” in Bareilly. The initiative aims to raise public awareness about wildlife conservation, ecological balance and animal welfare.
The state government is also undertaking efforts to minimise human-wildlife conflict. As part of the Wildlife Week programmes, schoolchildren will be educated about safety measures and ways to protect themselves from increasing wildlife encounters and attacks. The campaign will also focus on the conservation of key species, including the Sarus Crane, the state bird; Barasingha, the state animal; the Dolphin, the national aquatic animal; and snakes.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Ram Kumar said that schools at the district and tehsil levels would organise various programmes on wildlife conservation during Wildlife Week. Several competitions will also be held for schoolchildren on wildlife and environmental conservation.
Following the state government's directives, children up to 12 years of age will be allowed free entry to zoos in Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Kanpur. Children will be required to come in their school uniforms and carry their identity cards.
Sanjay Kumar Biswal, Director of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park, Lucknow, said the Wildlife Week celebrations would begin on October 2 at the Saras Auditorium. Competitions for students of Classes 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 will be conducted in three categories from October 3.
On October 3, a mask-making competition based on wildlife and environmental conservation will be held at Baradari Zoological Park, while a painting competition on wildlife camouflage and imitation will take place at the Duckpond Visitor Shed.
A street play competition on the theme “If Wildlife Could Speak...” will be organised at Baradari Zoological Park on October 4. Each school team can have up to 10 participants.
A wildlife-themed fancy dress competition focusing on wildlife and environmental conservation will be held at Saras Auditorium on October 5. A face-painting competition will take place on October 6, followed by rangoli and mehndi competitions on October 7 at Jhula Park.
The winners of the various competitions will be felicitated on October 8, marking the conclusion of Wildlife Week celebrations.
