Three women killed, 7 hurt in explosion at cracker unit, TN CM announces solatium

Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu), Apr 26 (UNI) In a gruesome tragedy, three women workers were charred to death and seven women injured, two of them critically, when a massive explosion ripped through a private fireworks factory at M.Pudupatti village near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
Police said the deceased were identified as M.Mariammal (51), R.Thiruvaimozhi (48) and V.Kalaiselvi (35).
The fire broke out at Standard Fireworks Factory, a reputed cracker unit when the workers were engaged in mixing highly inflammable chemicals for making a fancy variety of crackers.
Series of explosions had razed down five warehouses, where a huge stock of finished crackers and chemicals were stored, the sources added.
Fire tenders from Sivakasi and Sattur rushed to the factory and extinguished the blaze after a couple of hours of battle.
Police suspect that friction while handling the chemicals might have caused the fire, but a detailed probe is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
District Superintendent of Police D.Kannan along with senior revenue officials rushed to the factory and supervised the rescue operations.
The license of the factory was temporarily suspended by the district administration pending inquiry.
Police have registered a case and arrested two persons, including the manager of the factory in connection with the explosion.
