Telangana: Congress stages protest in Husnabad over arrests of Rahul Gandhi, INDIA bloc MPs

Siddipet (Telangana), Oct 7 (UNI) Congress party workers led by Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar staged a sit-in protest at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Husnabad on Tuesday, condemning the arrest of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and INDIA bloc MPs during their protest against alleged irregularities in voter lists.
Mr Prabhakar demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyaneshwar Kumar, alleging that the voter-list revision process had raised serious concerns over the deletion of eligible voters. He said the Election Commission, as a constitutional body, should protect the voting rights of every eligible citizen and maintain electoral rolls transparently.
He alleged that there were concerns over the deletion of voters belonging to SC, ST, BC and minority communities and said the Congress was raising awareness under the slogan "Vote Bachao - Desh Bachao" (Save the Vote - Save the Nation).
Condemning the arrests of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and K C Venugopal, the Minister said opposition leaders should not be arrested for peacefully raising issues concerning voters. He said suppressing the voice of elected representatives was contrary to democratic principles.
Mr Prabhakar recalled that the voting age was reduced to 18 during former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's tenure and said the right to vote represented the democratic identity of every Indian. He urged people to verify their names in the electoral rolls and called upon Congress workers to create awareness in every village and household.
He said the protest was aimed at protecting democracy, the Constitution and the right to vote and recalled the democratic values associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R Ambedkar.
Municipal Chairperson Dandi Lakshmi, Vice Chairperson Chittari Padma, councillors, Congress town and mandal presidents, market committee chairpersons, sarpanches, local leaders and party workers participated in the protest.
