Vandalur Zoo closed for public for 2 days following outbreak of Avian influenza

Chennai, Oct 22 (UNI) The Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) at suburban Vandalur, popularly called as Vandalur Zoo, was closed for public in view of outbreak of Avian influenza which was confirmed following the death of seven water birds.
Seven water birds had died between October 3 and 9. They included four painted storks, a grey pelican, a grey heron and an oriental darter. The deaths were reported in the zoo’s Vedanthangal bird enclosure, which houses around 150 birds belonging to 10 species.
The Zoo was shut for two days -- today and tomorrow -- as a precautionary measure after laboratory tests confirmed H5N1 infection in water birds by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, following tests on samples collected from dead birds.
Soon after the first death was reported on October 3, the Zoo authorities cordoned off the area and and put in place all preventive measures like disinfection, sanitisation, besides strengthening the biosecurity protocols. Preventive medicines were also administered to the water birds.
Zoo authorities said since no further bird deaths or signs of illness had been reported since October 9, it remained open for public. With the lab tests confirming presence of H5N1 infection, necessary protocols laid down by the union government has to be implemented. Hence the zoo would be outof bounds for public for two days.
