KPSC scam: Court rejects suspended IAS officer Gangwar’s bail plea

Bengaluru, Sep 25 (UNI) A Bengaluru court on Friday rejected the bail plea of suspended IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar, arrested in connection with the alleged Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) job-for-cash scam, despite his counsel citing his cancer treatment and other medical conditions.
Gangwar, a former KPSC examination controller and accused No. 5 in the case, claimed through his counsel that he was a survivor of testicular cancer, had undergone two surgeries and was still receiving chemotherapy.
His counsel also cited high blood pressure, asthma and chronic liver problems, besides severe lumbar spinal degeneration detected in an MRI conducted at Victoria Hospital on September 3. Doctors had allegedly advised spinal surgery and complete bed rest.
The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that Gangwar was an influential accused and could influence witnesses and hamper the ongoing investigation if released.
Public prosecutor Bhagyalakshmi KL told the court that the CID had identified the place where Gangwar allegedly handed over question papers to co-accused Basavaraj Kannale. Investigators had also found that a Xiaomi tablet allegedly used in the offence had been destroyed, the prosecution submitted.
The prosecution further alleged that Kannale collected money from candidates through accounts linked to Om Lakshmi Souharda Cooperative Society and another person, and used part of the funds to purchase gold for Gangwar. CID investigators have seized gold jewellery as part of the probe, it said.
Gangwar was earlier arrested by the CID in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment of veterinary doctors through KPSC. The Enforcement Directorate subsequently arrested him in its money-laundering investigation.
The case relates to allegations that candidates paid large sums of money to secure government veterinary officer posts through the recruitment process. The investigation is continuing.
