FIR against Karnataka BJP leader over alleged bid to delete 198 voter names

Belagavi, Oct 2 (UNI) A controversy over the alleged misuse of Form-7 applications during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has intensified in Karnataka, with police registering an FIR against BJP leader Ravi Patil and 20-25 others for allegedly attempting to remove the names of 198 voters from the rolls in Belagavi.
The FIR was registered at Belagavi Market police station on September 30 on a complaint by Meerasab Sanadi, who was working as a Booth Level Agent in Ward 12 of the Belagavi North Assembly constituency.
According to the complaint, Patil, Shankar Beerappa Naik, Prashant Deepak Mundinmani and others allegedly gathered on September 22 and sought deletion of 198 voters' names through Form-7 applications.
The complaint alleges that the applications targeted voters belonging to the Muslim community and were accompanied by forged documents, which were allegedly presented as having been issued by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).
The applications allegedly included the names of Sanadi and members of his family, besides those of other voters.
The FIR further alleges that the accused pressured the Booth Level Officer and arranged for another person to speak to the official over the phone while claiming to be the ERO. The complainant alleged that the interaction was used to obtain the BLO's signature on the documents.
Police have invoked several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those relating to cheating, forgery, use of forged documents, criminal conspiracy and unlawful assembly. The investigation is underway.
The case comes amid a wider controversy in Karnataka over the alleged misuse of Form-7 during the SIR exercise. Similar complaints and FIRs have been reported from Mysuru and Bidar over alleged attempts to remove voters' names from electoral rolls.
In Belagavi, the FIR relates to an alleged attempt to submit applications seeking deletion. It does not establish that the names of the 198 voters were actually removed from the electoral roll. Any deletion remains subject to the prescribed verification process.
The allegations against Patil and the other accused are subject to investigation.
