₹10 lakh or DYFI protest: Vigilance probe sought against CPM councillor in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3 (UNI) A complaint alleging that CPM councillor Ajin of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation demanded ₹10 lakh from a property owner and threatened to use DYFI workers to put up party flags on the property if the money was not paid has been submitted to the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, sources said.
Ajin, who represents the Thrikkannapuram ward, allegedly made the demand in connection with a 19-cent property owned by a Peyad resident near MLA Road. Audio and video recordings purportedly showing conversations linked to the allegation have also surfaced, sources said.
The complaint was filed by K. S. Sabarinadhan, UDF Parliamentary Party Leader of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, before Manoj Abraham, Director General of Police and Director of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, seeking an investigation into the allegations.
According to the complaint, the councillor allegedly demanded money from the property owner while invoking his position and authority as an elected representative. The complaint sought an inquiry into whether the alleged conduct attracted provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994.
It specifically sought examination of Sections 7, 7A, 11 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, besides other applicable provisions, depending on the facts and evidence emerging during the investigation.
The property owner has alleged that Ajin claimed there was government 'Puramboke' land associated with the property and offered to help resolve the issue or facilitate its regularisation for development and sale. The councillor allegedly demanded ₹10 lakh and threatened to bring DYFI workers to put up flags on the property and obstruct construction if the amount was not paid.
The complaint also alleged that the councillor threatened to involve the police and revenue authorities and raise objections over a canal and drainage channel passing through land recorded as puramboke.
Ajin has denied the allegations, saying he had not demanded money from the property owner. He has claimed that the video and audio recordings were edited and circulated in retaliation for his stand against alleged encroachment and construction on government puramboke land.
The complaint said the allegations, if established, would raise serious concerns regarding the conduct of an elected representative and the functioning of the Municipal Corporation, and urged the Vigilance authorities to take appropriate action.
Ajin is a former chairman of University College and former SFI leader.
