BC leaders urge govt to strengthen staff, facilities in BC, SC, ST hostels

Hyderabad, Sep 25 (UNI) A delegation led by National BC Welfare Association president and Rajya Sabha member R Krishnaiah on Friday met Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and urged the Telangana government to strengthen staffing and improve accommodation and other facilities in BC, SC and ST college hostels.
The delegation said nearly 10 lakh students were facing difficulties due to staff shortages and inadequate accommodation in hostels. It urged the government to review the situation and take immediate measures to improve facilities for students pursuing higher education courses such as degree, PG, engineering, medicine and pharmacy.
Krishnaiah said hostel workers should be appointed permanently instead of relying heavily on outsourcing.
He said excessive workload, coupled with delays in payment of monthly salaries, was prompting outsourced workers to leave, affecting cooking, sanitation and other services in hostels.
The delegation sought filling of vacancies created by the retirement of permanent hostel workers and appointment of four permanent workers—attender, watchman, cleaner and cook—in every BC, SC and ST college hostel. It also sought regularisation of workers who had completed four consecutive years of service.
The leaders said additional staff should be provided based on student strength, particularly in hostels accommodating more than 100 students. They also sought five additional workers in each hostel to meet the workload arising from the recently revised menu.
Among other demands, the delegation sought upgrading the Hostel Welfare Officer post to Grade-I, increasing BC college hostel seat capacity by 10 per cent, sanctioning 100 new BC college hostels and 50 BC residential schools.
State BC Welfare Association Working President Neela Venkatesh, BC Student Association State President Pagilla Satish, State BC Association President C. Rajender and BC leaders Anji Goud, Naresh Goud, Shiva Kumar Yadav, Balaram and K. Vamsi were among those who participated in the meeting.
