University of Hyderabad conducts 26th Convocation

Hyderabad, Oct 1 (UNI) The University of Hyderabad (UoH) conducted its 26th Convocation at the Global Peace Auditorium, Brahma Kumaris Shanti Sarovar, here on Thursday.
Telangana Governor and UoH Chief Rector Shiv Pratap Shukla, UoH Chancellor Justice L. Narasimha Reddy and former DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat, the chief guest, attended the convocation. Vice-Chancellor Prof J Anuradha presented the university’s annual report.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla urged graduates to use their education for society and contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047. He called upon students to become job creators, promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and embrace AI and emerging technologies without compromising human values. He also urged PhD scholars to generate knowledge that benefits society.
In his convocation address, former DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat said graduation marked the beginning, rather than the end, of learning. He urged students to pursue lifelong learning, remain adaptable, collaborate with others, take calculated risks and persevere through failures. Recalling his own career after completing his PhD in 1988, he said his experience at DRDO taught him the importance of continuously upgrading skills and staying committed to challenging goals.
Dr Kamat highlighted the long-standing DRDO-UoH partnership, noting that the Centre for Research in High-Energy Materials established in 2005 was converted into a DRDO Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence in 2023. He said such collaborations were important for developing indigenous defence technologies.
He referred to India’s indigenous defence systems, including Agni, Light Combat Aircraft, Arjun, Pinaka and Akash, and spoke about ongoing work in hypersonic missiles, advanced combat aircraft, AI, quantum technologies, autonomous underwater vehicles and directed-energy weapons. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said the effectiveness of military operations was supported by indigenous technologies such as sensors, unmanned platforms, secure communications, AI-assisted systems and precision weaponry.
Dr Kamat also cited the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme initiated in Hyderabad in 1983 under Dr APJ Abdul Kalam as an example of perseverance in pursuing difficult goals. He urged students not to fear failure, saying failures provide valuable lessons, and noted DRDO’s focus on emerging areas through its young scientist laboratories and industry-academia centres of excellence.
Chancellor Justice L Narasimha Reddy highlighted UoH’s research and innovation achievements, stating that the university has 177 active research projects worth over Rs 180 crore, 53 granted patents and 69 fresh projects secured during the past year. He said the university’s innovation ecosystem supports over 140 deep-tech startups, which have raised more than Rs 500 crore and created over 1,000 jobs. He urged graduates to remain curious, uphold integrity and use their education to address societal challenges.
A total of 1,721 degrees, including 300 PhDs, and 178 medals were presented at the convocation.
