Chennai, Oct 22 (UNI) Nuclear medicine can play a vital role in diagnosing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, liver cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease, union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr.Jitendra Singh, said on Thursday.
Delivering the 42nd Convocation address at the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) after presenting 106 gold medals to meritorious students in various specialities.at its campus in Porur, he said artificial intelligence, genomics, and quantum technologies are bringing significant changes to the medical field. In the past, people were mostly affected by communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria.
However, nowadays, they are increasingly affected by non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and coronary artery diseases, he said.
Highligting the significant developments made by India in nuclear medicine research and the partnership with the private sector, he said India is among the few countries that have opened up nuclear research to private-sector participation.
Nuclear medicine can play a vital role in diagnosing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, liver cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease. "Our primary objective must be to prevent long-term disorders, particularly those affecting young people. We must harness the energy, talent, and potential of our young population. The contribution of our youth will be vital to building a developed India. We cannot afford the potential of our youth to be lost to preventable diseases. All of us must come together, work collaboratively, and commit ourselves to this shared national cause: preventing disease, protecting the health of our youth, and contributing to the realisation of Viksit Bharat 2047", Dr.Jitendra said.
He said under National Genomics Data Grid (NGDG), the programme called SANGAM, which stands for Sequencing Atlas for National Genomics and Medicine, our aim is to sequence the genomes of approximately one million genetically diverse Indians and integrate this genomic information with clinical outcomes. This will help advance precision medicine, which is expected to become an integral part of medical practice in the future. These decisions will be guided by several factors, including each patient's genetic profile, lifestyle, and environmental exposures.
Chancellor, V.R.Venkataachalam conferred the degrees on 2,116 graduates, including Doctor of Science, Ph.D., PG and UG students in medical, engineering, and management disciplines. The Chancellor along with the Pro-Chancellor Mr. R.V. Sengutuvan distributed the degree certificates.
