IASO, National Cancer Grid sign pact to expand fellowship and surgical oncology training across India

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (UNI) The Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO) and the National Cancer Grid (NCG) on Thursday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to standardize surgical oncology education and broaden fellowship and specialised clinical training opportunities for cancer surgeons across the country.
The institutional tie-up follows an initiative proposed by Dr. C. S. Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital and Convener of the National Cancer Grid, aimed at creating a nationwide structured curriculum for mentorship and training in oncological surgery in collaboration with IASO leadership, the Association said in a release.
Under the framework, both bodies will pool academic and clinical resources across NCG-affiliated cancer centres to provide early-career surgical oncologists with hands-on exposure to advanced surgical procedures, robotic and minimally invasive surgeries, and emerging technological interventions in oncology.
The agreement also outlines plans for joint fellowship accreditations, institutional exchange modules, collaborative multi-centre research, and continuing education through operative masterclasses, workshops, and webinars.
"Building a strong and skilled surgical oncology workforce is essential to improving cancer care across India," Dr. C. S. Pramesh said.
"This collaboration between the National Cancer Grid and IASO is an important step towards creating structured training and fellowship opportunities, enabling young surgeons to learn from experienced specialists and leading institutions to promote high standards of surgical practice across the country," Dr Pramesh added.
Endorsing the initiative, IASO President and Medical Director of Hyderabad-based Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI), Dr. T. Subramanyeshwar Rao, stated that structured institutional mentorship is vital to preparing oncologists for complex interventions.
"Strengthening surgical oncology education is essential to preparing the next generation of cancer surgeons for the evolving challenges of cancer care. By bringing institutions and expertise closer together, we hope to help young surgeons build the skills and confidence needed to deliver high-quality cancer care to patients across the country," Dr. Rao said.
The formal agreement was signed in the presence of prominent oncologists, including Dr. Narendra Hulikal (Head of Surgical Oncology, SVIMS, Tirupati), Dr. Chandramohan (Head of Surgical Oncology, Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram), and Dr. Subbaiah Shanmugham (Head of Surgical Oncology, Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai).
