PM Modi lauds Bandaru Dattatreya for preserving Telangana culture through 'Alai Balai'; backs 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' theme

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commended former Haryana Governor and former union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya for his steadfast efforts in keeping Telangana’s rich cultural heritage alive through the annual 'Alai Balai Dasara Sammelan' in Hyderabad.
In an official message addressed to Dattatreya on the occasion of the Alai Balai Dasara Sammelan 2026, the Prime Minister noted that the traditional post-Vijayadashami celebration plays a vital role in reinforcing social bonds, affection, and brotherhood across communities.
"Alai-Balai is held after Vijayadashami, a festival which reminds us of the victory of good over evil. Such a celebration at this time brings people together and strengthens the bonds of affection and brotherhood in society," Modi said.
He added that the platform provides folk artists from across the region a prominent stage to showcase their indigenous talent while enabling citizens to engage directly with traditional cuisine, folk music, dance, and authentic art forms.
The Prime Minister welcomed the focal theme chosen for this year -- 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Viksit Bharat 2047' — highlighting the need to safeguard the country's youth from substance abuse and long-term national development.
"The dream of a developed India requires a healthy society in which our youth can realise their full potential, free from the harmful effects of drugs. Festivals and community gatherings like this provide an opportunity to engage with young people and inspire them," the Prime Minister wrote, extending his best wishes to all participants and organizers associated with the event.
Organised annually under the leadership of the Alai Balai Foundation, the cultural carnival draws thousands of attendees alongside leaders cutting across party lines, civil society members, and grassroots performers to celebrate Telangana's pluralistic traditions.
