Telangana power demand hits record 19,892 MW: Dy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, Oct 7 (UNI) Telangana's peak electricity demand touched a record 19,892 MW, the highest in the state's history, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said on Wednesday, adding that uninterrupted power supply was maintained despite demand nearing 20,000 MW
Addressing a press conference at Praja Bhavan, Bhatti said Telangana's peak demand was significantly higher than Karnataka's, which remained below 15,000 MW, while Andhra Pradesh's demand was around 13,000 MW.
He appreciated the Genco, Transco and Discom officials and staff for ensuring smooth power supply.
He clarified that there was no proposal to privatise Discoms, Transco or Genco, or convert the power utilities into listed companies, and said the Congress government was committed to strengthening public-sector undertakings.
On the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant, Bhatti alleged that the previous government had failed to secure adequate coal linkages.
He said an agreement signed in 2016 provided seven million tonnes of coal from Singareni against the plant's requirement of 14 million tonnes, with the remaining seven million tonnes proposed to be imported. A subsequent 2022 agreement envisaged sourcing the entire 14 million tonnes from Singareni, despite its G-9 grade coal production capacity being only 1.71 million tonnes.
He said the Congress government had revived the delayed project by resolving issues related to environmental clearances and was commissioning its units sequentially while arranging coal through alternative sources. The government was also pursuing a permanent coal allocation from the Centre, Coal India and Andhra Pradesh.
Bhatti said Yadadri power generation cost was Rs 6.66 per unit, compared with Rs 4.17 at Kakatiya and Rs 4.60 at Bhadradri, making Yadadri the most expensive source of power for the state's grid.
He said the higher cost would ultimately place a financial burden on consumers and Discoms.
