Visakhapatnam aims to achieve global cleanliness standards in three years

Visakhapatnam, Oct 2 (UNI) Visakhapatnam should strive to achieve international cleanliness standards and emerge as a global city through collective efforts by citizens, public representatives and officials, MP M. Sri Bharat and District Collector M. Abhisikth Kishore said on Friday.
Addressing the district-level Swachh Andhra Awards presentation ceremony at the VMRDA Children’s Arena on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, they said public participation was essential to make the city cleaner and improve sanitation standards. A total of 68 individuals and organisations received awards in various categories for their contributions to cleanliness.
Sri Bharat said cleanliness was not merely the responsibility of the government and stressed that every citizen should treat it as a social responsibility.
He called for greater public participation in sanitation programmes and increased awareness of cleanliness and environmental protection.
Collector Abhisikth Kishore said Visakhapatnam had modern sanitation systems, mechanised cleaning facilities, a waste-to-energy plant and advanced equipment to remove waste from the sea.
Modern sanitation practices had been in place in the city for nearly two decades, he added.
He called for concerted efforts to achieve cleanliness standards comparable to those in Japan over the next two to three years, stating that international standards would be essential for Visakhapatnam to emerge as a global city.
The dignitaries congratulated the award winners, noting that their contributions at the state and district levels would inspire others to participate in cleanliness initiatives.
Earlier, the guests paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his portrait.
AP Oil and Seeds Growers Corporation Chairman Gandi Babji, DCCB Chairman Kona Tatarao, and Swachh Andhra Corporation directors B. Ramireddy and J. Nagalakshmi, among others, attended the programme.
